In March this year, it emerged that New York based illustrator and cartoonist, Jillian Tamaki, has been commissioned to design a set of beautifully intricate hand embroidered covers for titles in the Penguin Threads Deluxe Classics series, namely:

> Frances Hodgson Burnett's  

The Secret Garden

 

> Jane Austen's  

Emma

> And Anna Sewell's  

Black Beauty

Appealing additions to any literary wishlist, no doubt. (Though perhaps not the last of these, which, despite being very lovely to look at, proved sufficiently tear-jerking during the first reading.)

 

Speaking on her sketchblog, Tamaki describes the endeavour as a 'dream project':

  'I said I wouldn’t take commissions in embroidery -

unless Penguin called me for a cover.
